Ownership depends on the type of PWB you choose:

Third-Party PWB: Yes, you will own the wheelchair outright and have full control over customisation and maintenance.

Notional and Notional Combined PWB: The wheelchair remains NHS property, and the NHS is responsible for servicing and maintenance of the core equipment.

Notional and Notional Combined PWB: Wheelchair services cover the cost of maintenance and repairs for the base NHS-provided wheelchair. Any optional extras or upgrades you've paid for are your responsibility.

Third-Party PWB: You are responsible for maintenance and repairs. You can use your personal funds to cover these costs, and the NHS provides a small amount towards these included in your Third Party PWB voucher.

If the wheelchair you want exceeds your PWB allocation, you can still purchase it by paying the difference directly to the supplier when you place the order.

You can use your PWB with any NHS-approved wheelchair supplier across the UK. The wheelchair you choose must meet the clinical specifications set by your therapist to ensure it supports your needs.

Yes, PWBs are specifically for new wheelchair purchases. They cannot be used for:

  • Mobility scooters
  • Trikes
  • Second-hand or refurbished wheelchairs
  • Non-standard mobility aids

The Personal Wheelchair Budget covers the cost of the wheelchair only. However, at AJM Choice, we provide free assessments to help you choose the right wheelchair without any additional cost.

If you’ve been referred to NHS wheelchair services and meet the criteria set by your local Integrated Care Board (ICB), you’re entitled to a Personal Wheelchair Budget if you require a new wheelchair.

Existing AJM Choice users can request a PWB review if:

  • Your clinical needs have changed
  • Your current wheelchair needs replacing due to age, wear and tear, safety making the wheelchair not fit for purpose anymore.

Your assessment reflects your needs at the time. If you don’t purchase your wheelchair promptly and your needs change, you may need to undergo another assessment to ensure the chair still meets your clinical requirements.

Yes, once your wheelchair prescription is approved by the NHS, you can immediately purchase your chosen wheelchair. However, you cannot buy a wheelchair privately and then request a PWB to cover the cost retrospectively.

Yes, you can use your Personal Wheelchair Budget towards a powered wheelchair if it meets your clinical requirements and has been approved by your therapist.

Yes, if you prefer a manual wheelchair with powered wheels and other powered addons, we can help you find a suitable solution within your PWB allocation, provided it meets your therapist's approval.

Items like cushions, postural supports, and specialist seating are usually provided separately by NHS wheelchair services. Your chosen wheelchair must be compatible with these items. However, you do have the option to purchase additional accessories and enhancements privately.
